Busting OpenBSD's code review myth

Do you notice the "ifdef" line in the following commit?

Well, OpenBSD didn't. They decided to blindly copy the changes anyway, which got them this nasty piece of easter egg:

Ouch, that's going to fail hard on OpenBSD.

How to use clang for pkgsrc builds

It's easy: just make sure you have a newer source tree than 20100923 and add the following to your /etc/mk.conf:

PKGSRC_COMPILER= clang f2c

Now remove some packages that hardcode gcc:

pkg_delete -r f2c libtool-base imake

Warning, this may remove other packages if they depend on these!

You are done, try to build stuff, and don't forget to report your success or failure on tech-pkg. ;)

latin2 support for wscons

I have added some latin2 fonts to NetBSD, so now its possible to configure the console for central european languages. Also added some examples to wscons.conf, so it will be really easy to enable it, even for beginners.
It's odd that i got a lot of request for help in this regard, as I never really needed this feature, but anyway, here it is!

Make Firefox faster in less time

We all know the trick to speed up Firefox by vacuuming the sqlite databases it's using.
It's just a simple for loop in shell. But can we do it faster? Of course, we can make it parallel, so it's finishing much sooner!

The script needs ksh, you can install pdksh or mksh, but other versions should work too.

How to compile PCC?

As you may know PCC is a new kid on the C compiler block, though it's based on the historic Unix compiler with the same name. It's currently aiming at full C99 compliance and it already support most of the language features, recently even C99 inline.

As it's still in an early stage of developement, obtaining a copy is recommended from the project's CVS.

First, check out the source tree:
$ cvs -d :pserver:anonymous@pcc.ludd.ltu.se:/cvsroot co pcc

After that, we can build it using autoconf:
$ cd pcc
$ ./configure --prefix=/opt/pcc
$ make
$ make install

Now we should have an /opt/pcc/bin/pcc binary, so we can start playing:

A basic proplib example

I had a little time to try property lists today.
Proplib is an API/lib to create, handle and store property lists.
It was created by Apple but NetBSD also have a clean room implementation in the system, and it's mostly used for implementing sysctl interfaces. It's a somehow limited implementation to make it faster/smaller (maybe extended in the future as demands grow).
Here's a little example code to show some of the basics:

Setting the default uid in gpg

It's a bit tricky to do it at the first time as the gpg --edit-key command line is a bit counterintuitive:

gpg --edit-key adam.hoka

you see something like this now:
Command>

type list and lookup the number next to the ID you want to use as a default and enter it.

Example:
Command> 2

It will list the IDs again (note the asterisk next to the selected ID).
Type primary and then save.

Done.

ARM based netbooks?

It seems the next generation of Cortex CPUs will also be aimed for netbook class portables and I'm pretty sure I saw somewhere a Samsung based ARM netbook too. x86 netbooks never really cought my attention, but I would certainly get my hands on an ARM based one! Especially if it runs NetBSD.

Haiku pre-alpha

Today I gave a try to Haiku alpha. There was an announcement about a disk image available for testing loaded with devel tools and some applications like Firefox and VLC. Those how may wonder what is Haiku: It's an open source reimplementation of the BeOS operating system and software environment. It's quite developed, though it still needs coding love I think. :)

After trying the image in qemu, the free machine emulator, I thought is should boot it on bare hardware too. Usually that's where in-development OS fail. But haiku did not.

Even if it wasn't as fast as BeOS, it was quite stable and usable. Detected my sound card and network card, but to be honest Realtek and SB Live are not so exotic harware.

I think it will kick ass when released.

Alpha SRM update with MOP

I wanted to update the DS10's SRM so I can load OpenVMS 8.3. Unfortunately it turned out the floppy is broken. Not that I have any floppies or floppy readers around in working state or something.
Anyway after giving up with the CD-ROM solution, I just decided to use MOP.
MOP is DEC's Maintenance Operations Protocol. It's designed for loading kernel over the network and other stuff involving booting files.
I just read NetBSD's mopd manpage and started:

Now I had the stuff up and running, so let's fire up the old lady and just use the lfu command.
If you want to boot from the image you can do that too, just move the image to the name it calculates from the mac address (just look at /var/log/messages to find out what's it looking for).

From the lfu prompt I only had to type "up srm" and I was ready to go. :-)

Google Android and BSD code

As Google just made the Android platform's codebase public, I could finally have a look at if it's really based on BSD code.
And yes, the whole /bin/sh code is taken from NetBSD and the libc code is based largely on OpenBSD and NetBSD libc. I did not look any further so there maybe other parts as well.

Though I'm not a fan of Google, it seems like a quite nice mobile plataform.
But time will tell. :-)

Warning: do not use Debian binaries/sources as they include many Debian specific bugs and still do not run correctly on Linux-2.6
Be careful with cdrecord derivates/forks from Debian, Debian seems to ignore the new constraints for
SCSI pass through on Linux-2.6. As a result, that they still incorrectly believe that it is possible
to use SCSI pass through as non-root on Linux-2.6, they created a cdrecord variant that tries to hide
the problems instead of dealing with the problems.

The Debian fork is based on an extremely outdated version of cdrtools.
The Debian fork of cdecord did rip off DVD support for no reason and
the mkisofs version distributed by Debian misses find(1) support, correct file meta data support
and the UDF enhancements as well as useful UTF-8 support is missing.

An original recent cdrecord is the preferred software.

Cdrecord supports DVD+-R and DVD+-RW with all known DVD-writers on all UNIX-like OS and on Win32.
DVD writing support is implemented in cdrecord since march 1998. Cdrecord writes DVD media similar to CD media.
Here is the place from where you may download the cdrtools source packages that include cderecord-ProDVD.

Important Information:
Both RedHat and SuSE started to publish the bastardized and defective variants of cdrtools from Debian in their distributions.
If you have problems on RedHat or SuSE systems, first fetch a recent original cdrtools source, compile it yourself
and run the original instead of broken software that illegally claims to be cdrecord.

Megneztem a zfs-t, hat nagyon kenyelmes hasznalni, az biztos. De fel giga ram alatt tenyleg ne probaljatok ki, nem poenbol irja, hogy tobb kell neki. :P
Remelem a jovo fajlrendszerei is sokat meritenek majd belole, mert ez nem egy n+1-edik fs.

Kaptam egy jo kis ipari PC-t, ami megdobogtattam az embedded-geek szivemet.
Mar csak delej kell neki, mert specko tap valo hozza. Szoval 24V power supply wanted :P

Ha nem akarunk grafikus feluletet futtatni a qemuban levo rendszerunkon, akkor semmi nem akadalyoz meg bennunket, hogy egy sima xterm-ben kapjuk a logint.

Ehhez csak egyszeruen soros konzolra kell atallitani a vendegredszert, majd a qemut, -nographic kapcsoloval inditani.

It`s performing very well, at least it makes my hard drive producing some nice noises.
You can actualy distinguish filesystems by listening to them. For example:

XFS: krrrrrr krrrrrr krrrrrrr
FFS: krrr rrrrr krr rrrrr
FAT: krrkrkgrrkrrrgkrkgkryarghkrkrkrkgrg

It sounds like "krr shhhhhhhhhhhh", because it does only a little amount of repositioning,
so sometimes you can only hear the cylinder spinning. :)
When the garbage collector kicks in it can be very load though. :P

BTW, here`s a quite old (circa 2000) sumary, mentioning LFS: filesystem`s metadata

LFS presents a radical new design for filesystem layout which makes rather different assumptions than traditional filesystems. The most important difference is that whereas traditional filesystems lay out files on disk once, near each other, and rewrite those blocks in the same place whenever they need to be rewritten, LFS instead always writes whatever blocks it has to write, all in the same place (i.e. all blocks to be written at time t0 are written to adjacent disk locations, regardless of what files they belong to), so that the same block of a file, written multiple times, will exist on the disk in multiple different locations. This allows safe, asynchronous file creation (the old version of the parent directory still exists in the case of a crash); fast file writes (all blocks are written together, without intervening head seek); and near-instantaneous crash recovery (the fs recovers from the last checkpoint and rolls forward, rather than having to be checked in its entirety for consistency).

Azota sok blogban es forumban probaltak kulonfelekeppen ertelmezni. A szokasos win vs lin fapfapfap-on kivul erdekes dolgokat is le lehetett olvasni rola.

Most jol kibabraltam vele es raprobaltam egy FreeBSD 5.5-ot. Eddig jol megy, de majd meglatjuk stabil-e hosszu tavon. Kb egy evig van az 5.x-re support, de ez most nem erdekes, csak mukodjon.
Hogy dragonfly-ban tudjak-e javitani esetleg a fagyast, azt nem tudom.

Szoval most orulounk. Viszont masik gepben az nfe-t inkabb lecserelnem. Meg ugy is kell meg egy halokartya. Olyan 3200Ft korul lenne egy ilyen egy helyi bolt listaja szerint: EN-9230TX32, nem egy csucsmodell, de nem nez ki olyan rossznak ennyiert.

Apropo, ezeknek az azsiai gyartoknak az oldalai masnak is monotype-ban jelennek meg? :)

Taltam egy jo kis szamitogep emulatort, ami PDP-11 es VAX mellett sok mas regi vasat kepes emulalni.
Fel is telepitettem ra egy NetBSD-t gyorsan, hogy mukodik-e. Vegul is, annak aki virtualizacioban akar ismerkedni vele, annak qemu helyett akar jo alternativa is lehet.
Aztan, akkor mar hasznaljuk valami erdekesebbre, telepitettem egy 4.3BSD-t.
Szepen megy a TCP/IP-je az emulalt ethernet-en. :)

Vegul is CentOS helyett felraktam a Slacky-t, mert megiscsak sokkal jobban kezre esik. :)
2.6.17-es kernel ment ra, mert a 2.4 nem akarta leallitani (erdekes, hogy a centos4 kernele ujrainditani nem akarta).
Bootstrap-eltem ra egy pkgsrc-t, mivel kellett par cucc, tobbek kozott egy hasznalhato szovegszerkeszto az nvi szemelyeben.

Gondoltam leirom a dolog menetet, hatha szuksege lesz ra valakinek:

Mivel https-t fogunk hasznalni, ezert szuksegunk lesz ezekre:

# yum install openssl perl-Net-SSLeay -y

Par dologra szuksegunk lesz a webmin hasznalatahoz, amit egy kulso repobol fogunk felrakni:

# vi /etc/yum.repos.d/dag.repo

Aztan ez mehet bele:

Majd toltsuk le a legujabb webmin rpm-et a webmin.com-rol:

Termeszetesen minden ilyen letoltest userkent csinalunk. ;)

# rpm -U webmin-1.330-1.noarch.rpm

Most mar fut is a gepen, ki lehet probalni a gep 10000-es portjan.

Kicsit tegyuk biztonsagosabba az egeszet:

# vi /etc/webmin/miniserv.conf

Allitsunk be egy tetszoleges portot es adjuk meg, hogy melyik ip-rol szeretnenk hasznalni, alamint allitsunk be par ajanlott dolgot:

Inditsuk ujra, hogy a modositasok ervenybe lepjenek:

Az upgrade menete NetBSD currentre, a kezikonyv szerint:

Ekkora megvan a forras, amit mar csak le kell fordítani:

Ha userkent forgatjuk (es miert ne tennenk) akkor enelkul nem megy:

> sudo chown replaced ../obj ../tools

Akkor neki is kezdhetunk:


> ./build.sh -O ../obj -T ../tools -U -u tools
> ./build.sh  -O ../obj -T ../tools -U -u distribution
> ./build.sh  -O ../obj -T ../tools -U -u kernel=GENERIC

Hogy melyik parancs mit forgat le, az szerintem egyertelmu. :)

Akkor johet a telepites:

Eloszor a kernel:

Hasznaljuk is ezt mostantol:

Xen elnapolva, majd ha lesz kedvem megnezem, de nem CentOS alatt.
Nekem kicsit galambra agyuval kategoria az otthoni routerre ilyen OS-t rakni.
Most azert kicsit ismerkedem vele par napig, aztan migralok Slackware-re, vegul is az a nekem valo. :D
Raktam ra egy webmin-t is, hogy lassak olyat is. :P

Xen

Elhataroztam, hogy beleasom magam a Xen lelki vilagaba. A terv, hogy csinalok egy CentOS DomU-t es ala berakok egy NetBSD Dom0-t (legalabb is mindenkeppen valami BSD-t). Az lenne a trukk lenyege, hogy a hardvert kezelne a Linux, viszont a tuzfal feladatokat es egyebb szerverfunkciokat a NetBSD latna el. Majd meglatjuk mi sul ki belole.
Igazabol a CentOS-t sem ismerem, de illene megismerni a RH vonalat is. Szoval ket legyet egy csapasra.

Tegnap a vilag legtisztessegesebb munkajat vegeztem a nagyszuleimnel, muveltem a foldet. :)

Akarhogyan probaltak az elmult 50 evben negativ jelzokent beallitani, en buszke vagyok a paraszt szarmazasomra.

HUP sorozes

Vegul is raszantam magam es elmentem a HUP sorozesre, most eloszor.
A vonatot szokas szerint majdnem lekestem, de a vonatokkal mar csak igy vagyok.

A keletinel oszetelefonaltam magam thuglife-fal, bar ot nem volt nehez megismerni (jo kis OpenBSD eloadast tartott par eve, bar en csak videon lattam), aztan meg megvartuk egyik sracot (a nevmemoriam borzaszto, patch-et elfogadok :P) es irany a Moszkva ter.
Mikor odaertunk akkor meg csak turul volt ott, leultunk es aktivan megkezdtuk a sorozest. :P

Jo volt igy szemelyesen talalkozni a kozosseggel, jokat beszelgettunk.
Notebookos kockulast nem birtak megallni azert, hat derekszoget lehetett volna hozzajuk merni az biztos. ;)
Eleg koran hazamentek sokan sajnos, de hat en ugy mentem, hogyha mar ott vagyok, akkor nem sietek sehova. Talan ketto korulig maradt egyben meg a tarsasag, de a vegen mar csak oten voltunk.

Vegul is harman maradtunk: tolmi, turul es en. Tolmi bedobta, hogy tud valami helyet es ha mar van egy jo esteje akkor menjunk at oda (afterparty :P). Vegul is mentunk a "nemtudomhova" ahol turul sikeresen elaludt ulve. :P
Mi jol ereztuk magunkat, bar gondolom turul is, csak o nem a klasszikus ertelemben. :D
Azert a vegen vicces volt, mikor felkeltettem zaraskor, megkerdezte, hogy "aludt-e", hat mondtam neki, hogy nem is kicsit. :P

Aztan turul ment vonatjahoz en meg tolmival tartottam, mert megengedte, hogy nala aludjak.
Vegul is negy korul hazaertem. :)

Jo kis pentek este volt, pedig nem is szeretem a sort. :P

Ehhe, megtalaltak a jo kis hazai spam-ek, Joceg(tm) nem szuri ezeket ezek szerint. Na akkor majd en megprobalom. Bogofiltert szepen felrakom, Sylpheed-ben bogofilter bekapcsol, megetettem vele amim volt, aztam majd meglatjuk.

Remelem nem lesz tobb kihagyhatatlan warezoldalrol es dijmentes torrentrol aradozo level foloslegesen az inboxomban. Bar ezek kifejezetten viccesek.
Bar kaptam mar olyan spam-et is, amiben annyi volt a random szoveg, hogy nem tudtam elkuloniteni a reklamot a bullshittol. Bar lehet, hogy az is belejeatszott, hogy nemetul volt. "KAUF-TIPP DER WOCHE" :D
